This forum will address the use of complementary therapies when dealing with breast, ovarian or gynecological cancer. It is the 17th public educational forum presented jointly by Support Connection and Northern Westchester Hospital.
“Complementary therapies” are healing practices and techniques that work in conjunction with traditional medicine. This program will provide an overview of the following modalities: Acupuncture, Meditation, Reiki, Reflexology, Therapeutic Massage, and Yoga. The speakers will discuss how these techniques may be beneficial, and how to identify qualified practitioners.
SPEAKERS:
Mia Azcue, CYT, E-RYT 500, RPT: Mia has been a student and teacher of yoga for 20 years. She is also a NYS licensed Physical Therapist. Mia is certified by the American Viniyoga Institute as a teacher and yoga therapist. As a yoga therapist, Mia draws on her training and applies yoga principles to assist each person with any physical, emotional and/or spiritual challenges they may be facing.
Alison Brates, LMT: Alison is a Massage Therapist, licensed in NY and CT by the National Board for Therapeutic Massage. She is also is certified in elder massage, massage for people with cancer and life altering illness and for oncology patients in the hospital setting, and Manual Lymphatic Drainage. In working with individuals experiencing health issues, Alison aims to introduce a sense of ease, trust and deep relaxation, so the individual may experience a healing reconnection between body, mind and spirit.
Marilyn Leroy-Sterling, RN, BSN, MS, NP-C: Marilyn is a Master’s prepared Nurse Practitioner with 18 years of oncology experience. She earned a Master of Science from Adelphi University and received training as an Integrative Health Coach from Duke Integrative Medicine. Marilyn helped develop and launch the Health and Wellness Program at NWH’s Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center, and is currently the program’s Care Coordinator. In 2012 she started the Cancer Survivorship Program at NWH.
Anne E. West, MS, RN, MSTOM, LAc: Anne is an advanced practice nurse in Holistic Nursing and a Licensed Acupuncturist and Certified Herbalist. Anne’s background in both eastern and western health care settings enables her to offer an integrative approach to healing. She has worked in many diverse settings, and has training in numerous modalities including Herbs, Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy, Spiritual Healing, Meditation, Reiki, Reflexology and Aromatherapy.
