COUNTY EXECUTIVE LATIMER ANNOUNCES NATIONAL SENIOR HEALTH & FITNESS DAY EVENTS, MAY 30, 2018

“Active Today, Healthier Tomorrow!”

Think dance and yoga is just for young folks? Think again, because Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) is proving that age is just a number! In honor of National Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 30, dancercise, gentle tai chi, chair yoga and low-impact aerobics will be offered at 22 senior and community centers across the County.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Westchester is pleased to participate in this nationwide event by offering exercises and activities specifically designed to improve health and physical fitness for seniors. We have programs taking place in 18 of our municipalities, so find a program close to home and sign up today.”

Senior Health and Fitness Day programs are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 30, with the exception of a few activities taking place during the first week of June. Programs will be held throughout Westchester at one of the 22 senior and community centers listed below. All programs are free and open to Westchester residents who are 60 years or older. For information regarding specific activities, schedules and registration requirements, participants are asked to contact the centers directly. A program for Spanish-speaking seniors will also be provided.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day takes place annually in May in recognition of Older Americans Month, and is organized through a public/private partnership with Mature Market Resource Center, a national information clearinghouse for the aging market. Local events are facilitated by Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) and its Health and Wellness Collaborative, comprised of 20 partnering community organizations.

According to DSPS Commissioner Mae Carpenter, National Senior Health and Fitness Day offers seniors an opportunity to try new exercises or fitness classes, learn about health, wellness and nutrition programs, and socialize with members of the community.

Carpenter said: “Exercise and physical activity is crucial for seniors who want to remain independent and healthy as they age. We hope that our programs encourage Westchester seniors to make physical fitness a priority in their everyday lives.”

National Senior Health and Fitness Day programs and events will take place at the Westchester locations listed below. Interested seniors should call each location directly to learn its address, the programs each will offer, the times and how to register. The locations and their telephone numbers can also be found at www.westchestergov.com/seniors.
