Karwaan, Global journey of music

Sunday, September 29, 2019  04:00pm  06:00pm

India Center of Westchester (“India Center”), with more than 500 member families across the Tristate area, presents Karwaan, A Global Journey of Music to be held at the Irvington Town Hall Theatre on Sunday, Sept 29, 2019, from 4 pm to 6 pm. The word Karwaan (in English, Caravan) harks back to companies of travelers on a long journey through unknown lands. India Center’s Karwaan event highlights the journey of the music through lands, rivers and oceans, preserved for centuries in India, that is now spread around the world.

India Center is bringing Sangeet Villas founders Pt.Kinnar Seen and Payal Seen to Westchester county to further the musical journey started from India and then evolved into a global passion.  Accompanied by their students, including India Center’s Sitar teacher, Amita Ajmera, the performance will consist of Hindustani vocal and instrumental music from India, fused with the music of Guyana and Trinidad and the West. This event is open to all lovers of music, regardless of ethnicity and preference. In other words, there will be something new for all!

Pandit Kinnar Seen is a brilliant musician from Punjab, teaching Tabla, Sitar and Hindustani Vocal to hundreds of students in Queens and Long Island. Kinnar Seen has performed with the Beatles Magical Orchestra in 2005, conducted by David Amram and performed at the residence of John Lennon.  Kinnar Seen has given numerous lectures and demonstrations at prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, Princeton University, Brown University, The State University of New York in Stony Brook and The Julliard School of Music. In his role as a guru (teacher), he continues to inspire his shishyas (students) to experience the joy of music while advancing to higher skill levels.

His students form a melting pot of various cultures, all endeavoring to learn the language of Indian music which has brought them together to work towards a common passion - to share the art and culture globally and to enable its fusion into our daily lives.

India Center, located at 174 Brady Avenue, Hawthorne NY, provides a venue to celebrate all occasions of significance to the community through music, dance and art, as well as through spiritual, intellectual, creative and social venues, including Southeast Asian languages, for both children and adults. In addition, the Center holds and participates in cultural activities that span the spectrum of India's diversity, presenting contemporary events like Bollywood Gharana, Riyaaz Qawwali, Romeo and Juliet in traditional Indian Kathak dance form, Parampara (showcasing the timeless relationship between Guru and Shishya through music and dance)), as also collaborative events like Wa No Kakehashi (Bridge of Understanding) where Japanese students performed classical Indian dance and wowed the audience with their artistry and skill. India Center can justifiably be proud of providing a forum and environment for the healthy all-round growth and development of the Westchester Southeast Asian community.

The purpose of the program is to create exposure to music not only limited to students in training but to the larger tristate community. It seeks to build appreciation for this wonderful traditional art form and ensure its relevance for the next generation.

The Center invites you all to participate in this unique event to be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019 at 4 PM at The Irvington Town Hall Theater, 85 Main St, Irvington, NY. A separate brochure is being published with the profiles of the artists and their accomplishments and it will be made available to the attendees at the event. Tickets are available for online purchase at https://squareup.com/store/india-center-of-westchester-inc.
