City Archivist Elaine Massena and former Local History Librarian BEN HIMMELFARB collaborated on "White Plains in the 20th Century," a pictorial history published by Arcadia Publishing. Their book draws from the unique collections of the Office of the City Clerk and the White Plains Public Library, along with some material from the Westchester County Archives. Focused on the changing built environment of the downtown area (especially the growth during the 1920s and the Urban Renewal period in the 1960s and 1970s), the book also contains lots of lesser-known historical figures and episodes from the 1900s in White Plains. Part social history, part photographic retrospective, White Plains in the 20th Century illustrates better known episodes of the city's past and brings newer historical narratives to light as well. Himmelfarb and Massena will discuss the book and their writing process and will allow time for a Q&A session. |
