Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center Memory Keepers Online Cocktail Hour: GenerationsForward Speaker Series-Ellen Kaidanow

Friday, July 17, 2020  05:00pm  06:00pm

The Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center’s Memory Keepers Online Cocktail Hour will feature GenerationsForward speaker Ellen Kaidanow on July 17 at 5 p.m.

Ellen Kaidanow is the daughter-in-law of two Holocaust survivors. Her mother-in-law, also named Ellen Kaidanow, was only 5 years old when her mother, father, and two sisters were forced to leave their home in Dubno, Ukraine to a walled Jewish ghetto. Ellen tells her mother-in-law’s story as a young girl in the ghetto and her miraculous tale of becoming the sole survivor of her family at the age 6. She was saved by a Christian woman who hid her for two years.

Ellen feels that part of her fate and purpose is to be witness for her month-in-law’s story. She wants to honor her and help others of all religions have a personal connection to the Holocaust so they become witnesses. Most important, she want to influence others to be “upstanders”, not bystanders. She also wants to show those, who are struggling with tragedy that her mother-in-law was able to be resilient under the worst circumstances and went on to have great joy and love in her life despite the devastating experience she had as a child. When possible, Ellen’s mother-in-law accompanies her to the presentation and will be available for a question and answer period afterwards.

As part of our mission, we have established the Memory Keepers Online Cocktail Hour—our stories, where our members will share their family’s experiences. Each cocktail hour, a Memory Keeper will give testimony, which can be seen online from the safety and comfort of your own home.

We tell our family’s story from our next generation perspective, adding new meaning to the survivors’ powerful stories of witness. Our stories provide a thought-provoking window into the unimaginable consequences of human hate, and help individuals realize that their daily choices matter, that one person can make a difference, and that hope is important, regardless of the circumstances.

As part of the GenerationsForward initiative of the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center, Memory Keepers help achieve its mission to teach the lessons of the Holocaust, to promote the right of all people to be treated with dignity and respect, and to encourage speaking up and acting against all forms of hate, bigotry, and prejudice.
