OG Westchester Weekly Speaker Program

Tuesday, February 02, 2021  11:00am  12:00pm

The Old Guard of Westchester is a not-for-profit organization, with roots that go back to 1954.  Old Guard members are residents of Westchester County and neighboring communities.  We are retired or semi-retired men who had careers such as businessmen, lawyers, doctors, managers, financiers, writers, teachers, and communication specialists.

Normally we meet every Tuesday at the Ethical Culture Society building in White Plains to socialize and listen to guest speakers on topics including local, regional and national social issues, economic and political topics, medicine and other science related subjects. During the current pandemic our meetings, including our programs, have been conducted on ZOOM Virtual Meetings.  For information regarding attendance at a specific event, contact:  Stephen Loewengart --- (914) 761-3384

This Week's Program:  Extra, Extra, Read All About It!

This Week's Speaker: Adam Stone - Publisher of the Examiner

About the Speaker:  After having worked as a newspaper reporter in the region since 2001, Adam Stone started The Examiner in 2007 to fill a local news need in his community. At the time, he helped deliver 2,000 copies of the print edition around Pleasantville and Mount Kisco. Since then, Stone has grown Examiner Media into the publisher of four community weekly newspapers across Westchester and Putnam counties, reaching about 100,000 readers across print and digital platforms. In recent years, the company has redoubled its digital efforts, developing theexaminernews.com into a leading local source for reliable, fact-checked community journalism. While questions surrounding the business model for local news remain unsolved, the thirst for professionally reported local information has never been in greater demand.

Extra Info    How do local newspapers thrive, let alone survive, in these days when advertising suffers because restaurants, stores, and cultural events are shut down, and huge companies are gobbling up small newspapers, often eliminating their print copies and cutting their staffs? One local publisher, Adam Stone, of the Examiner has a story to tell and a newspaper to sell, but he gives it away for free. We’ll find out how he does it.”
