Memoir Writing Class

Tuesday, October 12, 2021  10:30am  12:00pm

The workshop’s first session will begin with a short discussion of memoir. Students will then write for about twenty minutes and read their writing aloud. For the subsequent sessions, students will bring in work that they have written at home, read it to the class, and receive feedback from the instructor and the other students. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed some short pieces or longer memoirs that they can continue developing on their own.

Joan Potter taught memoir for adults for ten years at the Hudson Valley Writers Center in Sleepy Hollow, and an additional four years teaching fourth graders at the Center’s outreach program at the RSHM Life Center, a community center for Latino immigrants. She taught memoir at the Northern Westchester Center for the Arts in Mount Kisco, the Mount Kisco Public Library, the Essex County Historical Society in Elizabethtown, N.Y., a state prison in Moriah, N.Y., and the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester.

Her writing has been published in numerous anthologies and literary journals and in the collaborative memoir Still Here Thinking if You: A Second Chance With Our Mothers.
